The Ninth Avenue Food Festival begins on May 19th
Are you ready for two days of delectable delights from all over the world? The Ninth Avenue Food Festival, an annual event that is happening for the 39th time this year, begins on May 19th. Are you planning on being in town that weekend? On Saturday May 19th and Sunday May 20th, over two hundred vendors will be setting up on Ninth Avenue between 42nd and 57th Streets. Tasty treats and delicious dishes from all over the world will be available for your discerning palate.
Sponsored by the Ninth Avenue Association, the International Food Festival was established in 1973 to unite an ethnically diverse business community and raise funds for community programs such as scholarships, children’s activities, and senior events and services. Funds are also put aside each May for giveaways to needy families around the holidays. The event officially runs for five hours on Saturday and Sunday, from Noon to 5:00 PM, but participating restaurants are open later on both days.

What can you expect for food? The Ninth Avenue International Food Festival lives up to its name. Restaurants and street vendors serve dishes from all over the world. Polish, Italian, Greek, and Spanish foods are available at multiple locations. You’ll be treated to the sights, smells, and tastes of Japanese, Thai, Mandarin, and Indian foods. There are specialty West African dishes and of course some good old fashioned American entrees and treats. Even the pickiest eaters will find something they will enjoy.
Participating restaurants include places like Rudy’s, the Vintage, and the Coppersmith Bar and Grill. Ninth Avenue boasts some of the best food and drink venues in Manhattan, and May is a great time to enjoy both outdoor and indoor hot spots. Be sure to pop inside a few times while you’re sampling select culinary favorites. Coffees from Columbia, ales from Europe, and Sake from the Far East are all on the menu, along with a full compliment of sodas, flavored waters, and juices for the young ones.
The Ninth Avenue International Food Festival is a family event. A children’s pavilion will be set up between 53rd and 54th, so parents need not worry about keeping the kids occupied. Many of the restaurants and vendors along the Avenue also have children’s menus and entertainment set up that the whole family can enjoy together. Nearly forty years of planning and executing this event every May has provided shop owners the experience they need to make sure everyone has a good time.
The Food festival is free to attend and many of the appetizers that are put out are also. There are meals and desserts you can pay for, drinks you can buy for friends and strangers, and some souvenirs you can swipe your debit card for, but there’s no obligation to spend anything if you don’t want to. Come out and enjoy the fun, the food, and the fantastic sights and sounds of Manhattan. It’s May in New York. Can you think of a better time to have a food festival on Ninth Avenue?
